As a veteran operator since 1985, many of my colleagues and I have become frustrated with not being able to access pertinent patient data to serve our customers with necessary real time information to keep them safe and provide appropriate treatment.
I have experienced several EMR and EHR companies that have made it difficult to share appropriate data with other EMRs and or software vendors with no clear explanation. With all the information about Health Information Exchange and Meaningful Use one can be puzzled by the lack of information exchange and “blocking” access to data that is essential to the patient and provider.
I was dismayed to learn in former VP Joe Biden’s article, that many EMR companies have their own agenda to drive additional revenues and charging for any additional data access, hence “holding data hostage” when in fact the data belongs to the patient not the EMR Vendor.
In my journey I have found only a few companies such as Stratus Interoperable that have solved this puzzle by being able to pull all appropriate data from all their EMRs. Stratus can extract and organize this disparate data into one central location for easy access. The user then has the ability to develop custom dashboards and reports with real time data.
As the challenges continue to mount to provide outstanding outcomes with reduced reimbursements in a shorter period of time—immediate access to data is essential to assist each operator and make appropriate decisions for their customers in addition to staying financial solvent and compliant with state and Federal Regulations.
